Workshop 4:  Lathe tutorial, Re-pivoting an arbor, Repair/Replacement of wheel teeth.  Discussion of heat treatment of materials commonly used in clocks. 

 

Note:  You will NOT need your movement unless you have wheels with damaged teeth or arbors with broken pivots.

 

Materials needed (minimum):

 

Safety glasses or safety goggles (no exceptions please)

Household two position slip joint pliers

Small hammer (brass faced)

Small staking block or anvil

Sidecutter pliers

Flat blade screwdrivers (one with 1/8 wide tip, one with ¼ wide tip)

Workmat (e.g. carpet remnant, carpet padding)

Notebook, pen / pencils (to make a sketch of the layout of the gears)

Sharpie black pen (fine tip)

 

We will provide:

Bench lathe

Wheels and arbors on which you will practice

Pivot burnishing tool

Polishing paste

Arbor Press / Staking set

Cutting and smoothing broaches

Jewelers files, smooth jaw pliers

Vice

Cleaning solution

Compressed air source

Mainspring lubricant

Stuff you might forget

 

 

 

Bring a bag lunch & beverage

Workshops will be held at the Jim Lea's Shop, 62 Pascal Ave, Rockport, Maine  

Map:

If headed North on US-1:

Turn left onto Rt-90 for 10.8 miles. At its end, there is light at Rt-1. Continue straight on West Street for 0.3 miles to its end. Jim's shop will be on your right, enter through Pascal Avenue.

 

If headed South on US-1:

When you come to the light at Rt-90 turn left onto West Street for 0.3 miles to its end. Jim's shop will be on your right, enter through Pascal Avenue.
