“If Your Business Was Here, You’d Be Home Now.”  Thirty-eight members and guests arrived at the Atrium “Winner’s Sports Grill” in Brunswick, Maine beneath clear skies.  Though it had the appearance of an early spring, a brisk winter breeze reminded us to keep on our long johns.

Newcomers aren’t strangers for long, for Chapter 89 is known for good hospitality.  Everyone had an opportunity to ponder over the three orangutans and strange contraption at the side of the dining area, and we all enjoyed a whiff of “what’s cookin” from the luncheon buffet.

The 166th meeting and 37th year of Maine Chapter 89 got underway at 11:00 a.m. with some NEW faces in the crowd.  During the Welcome Hour, we caught up on the latest news.

The Business Meeting started around 1:00 PM, led by 1st Vice-President Nan Vance.  She extended a special warm welcome to Laura Morse, widow of our honored member, Carroll Morse.  Chapter Advisor and friend, Cal Morgan, shared some thoughts with the membership over his long-time friendship with Carroll Morse.

Nan Vance then welcomed members and guests during her opening introduction and asked for folks to make a “self introduction”.

OLD BUSINESS:  Chapter Secretary Ern Grover read the Minutes of the Meeting for our January 2006 meeting.  Treasurer Tom Vance rendered the Treasurer’s report.  The membership accepted both reports.

NEW BUSINESS:  Nan Vance inquired about Chapter 89 interest in Washburn-Norlands Living History Center to be held the last weekend of June 2006 at Livermore, Maine.  Several chapter members offered their continuing support.

MEMBER RECOGNITION:  Awards Chair Ern Grover presented an award to Member Chuck French.  He was recognized for his volunteer work in the Chapter.  Thanks to Chuck’s time on the phone and behind the wheel, we now have a fantastic luncheon facility at the Atrium for future meetings.

NEW MEMBERS INDUCTED:  David Crocker of Hamden, Maine and Michael Gentile of Yarmouth, Maine were formally inducted as new members of Chapter 89.  Welcome to the family of Chapter 89!

Looking ahead:  1st Vice-President Vance announced our next meeting would be held on May 20th again at the Atrium.  Our presentation will come to us from Ern Grover on the topic of Clock Maintenance, Simple Repairs and Simple Adjustments.  Our Annual “Lobstah Picnic” will be July 15 at the Rockport Boat Club, September 16 and November 18.  Our November 18th meeting will be our Annual Chapter Auction and Election of Officers for 2007.

Raffle drawing:  Marilyn Mosher won the $20 draw, and Ben Crosby won the $10 draw.  Congratulations!

presentation:  A motion to adjourn the meeting was made and seconded, and the members turned their attention to the presentation, “Down Memory Lane”.  Jim Bryant, still married to his first wife Margaret for nearly 50 years, is known as “The Hurdy-Gurdy Man” all over the Northeast for the past fifteen years, after retiring from being a Steamfitter Controls Technician amongst many other trades.

Always a favorite, member Jim Bryant shared some memorable moments of the beginnings of Chapter 89, giving special tribute to long time member and friend Carroll Morse.  Then he took us on a short trip down Memory Lane, and paying a little homage to some of our Old Timers.  In the background, a Powerpoint presentation flickered nearly 100 pictures from past meetings back as far as the establishment of Chapter 89 in 1975.  Of course, no program is complete unless Jim shares what’s been happenin' back at 'Shuy Connah', and a few teasers about “bein' a clock-fixah and collectah.”  As usual his pet Orangutans, Frizzy, Fonzy and Fred, played a little in the background, while he “ran the rosin” to play a couple of melodies on the SAW.

Invitation: Come join us at a future meeting.  We’d love to show you some Maine hospitality.
