“Welcome to Maine, the way life should be!”  Fifty-two members and guests arrived at the China Rose Restaurant in downtown Brunswick, Maine beneath sunny skies.  There’s a chill in the air, and old man winter is rearing breathing down our necks.

Newcomers aren’t strangers for long, for Chapter 89 is known for good hospitality.  Everyone had an opportunity to ponder over the growing display of auction, and we all enjoyed a whiff of “what’s cookin” from the buffet.

The 164th meeting and 36th year of Maine Chapter 89 got underway at 11:00 a.m. with some NEW faces in the crowd.  During the Welcome Hour, we caught up on the latest news.

The Business Meeting started around 1:00 PM, led by President John Hannington.  He welcomed members and guests during his opening introduction and asked for folks to make a “self introduction”.

OLD BUSINESS:  Chapter Secretary Ern Grover rendered a reading of the Minutes of the Meeting for our September 2004 meeting.  Treasurer Jim Powers rendered the Treasurer’s report.  The membership accepted both reports.

NEW BUSINESS:  Member Jim Lea initiated discussion regarding the investment of treasury funds in the form of a Certificate of Deposit.  Several members offered recommendations concerning future Chapter presentations ranging from outside speakers, audio-visual programs and “hands-on” workshops.  Member Richard Mechaber suggested we solicit ideas from the membership in the form of a survey to be sent in with the next meeting meal reservation.  After several minutes of discussion, President Hannington concurred with the need to address these issues and recommended that they become topics for the next Executive Council Meeting.  Thereafter some of the items could be brought back to the membership for further discussion and a vote.

Chapter 89 is invited to participate in the NAWCC Craft Contest.  President Hannington will hold this information for those of the membership who have interest.

Looking ahead:  Our January 21, 2005 Meeting will again be at China Rose in Brunswick, Maine.  Member Gerry Haviland will feature a program “Chemicals for Clock Repair and Assembly”.

NEW MEMBERS INDUCTED:  President Hannington officiated in the induction of Bruce DeLugo, Kenneth Ready and Nan Vance.  Welcome to the family of Chapter 89!

ELECTION OF OFFICERS:  After some brief comments, recommendations and leg pulling, President Hannington announced vacant officer positions and solicited nominations.  The member accepted and voted on the nominations.

show & tell:  Jim Lea brought us an unusual and unsigned lyre banjo clock.  In Jim’s words, “The Banjo is an alarm model but the alarm is completely missing. The general conclusion is that the same movement was used for both standard and alarm orders by just adding the alarm part when it was ordered. I made all of the alarm from scratch and am now working on making a complete repro Banjo alarm  movement.”

Cal Morgan sported a handsome Swiss 8 day Octava dashboard watch, size 16, inscribed USAP (United States Air Patrol).  In Cal’s words, “for use in the early flying machines of the first World War”.  He said this with such certainty and conviction, as though he’d been the Curtis Jenny biplane fighter pilot.   Couldn’t be.  We all know he was an able seaman.

Raffle drawing:  Creighton Gogos won the $20 draw, and David Smith won the $10 draw.  Kathy’s still looking for that $10 in the offering plate.  Congratulations!

auction:   A motion to adjourn the meeting was made and seconded, and the members turned their attention to the Annual Auction.  Jim Lea and President Hannington officiated the auction.  There was a good offering of clocks, books and tools.  Members exhibited their true Maine tradition of not overpaying for items. In the end most found a new home, including a beat-up cuckoo clock and lots of books.  One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.”

Invitation: Come join us at a future meeting.  We’d love to show you some Maine hospitality.

Ern Grover, Chapter 89 Secretary
