“Welcome to Maine, the way
life should be!” Forty-four
members and guests arrived at the China Rose Restaurant in downtown coastal
Brunswick, Maine beneath partially cloudy skies. We’ve finally left winter and are now officially in
our second season, “getting ready for wintah”. Maine’s State Bird, the black fly, dominates our leisure
hours outdoors at this time of year.
And soon balmy weather will be upon us along with her cousin, the
mosquito. Well, where else can one
enjoy four seasons of snow, rain, mud and drought along with a change of
flying insects?
Newcomers aren’t strangers
for long, for Chapter 89 is known for good hospitality. Everyone had an opportunity to ponder
over the growing display of Show ‘N’ Tell items, and we all enjoyed a whiff
of “what’s cooking?”
The 161st
meeting and 36th year of Maine Chapter 89 got underway at 11:00
a.m. with some NEW faces in the crowd.
During the Welcome Hour, we caught up on the latest news.
The Business Meeting
started around 1:00 PM, led by President John Hannington. He asked
for folks to make a “self introduction”.
OLD BUSINESS:
Chapter Secretary Ern Grover rendered a reading of the Minutes of
the Meeting for our May 2005 meeting.
Treasurer Jim Powers rendered the Treasurer’s report. The membership accepted both reports.
NEW BUSINESS:
SPECIAL WELCOME: We extend
a special welcome to guests C. J. Cecil of Bailey’s Island, Cam Cote of
Biddeford, and John Quinlan of Brunswick.
Ross Burton of Winnsboro, SC was a special visitor from Palmetto
Chapter 144. Thank you for joining
us.
Looking ahead: Our July 16, 2005 Lobster Picnic Meeting
will be held at the Rockport Boat Club with Jim Lea offering a second
presentation on case restoration.
norlands
project: President Hannington opened the floor for
further discussion regarding interest in Chapter 89 involvement with Norlands Living History Center in
2005. Chair Ben Crosby will pull
this together shortly. Members who
will take part are John and Nancy Hannington, Trudy Crosby, Alex and Jane
Cummings, Dennis Hillman, Ern Grover, Ray and Gail Humphreys. The proposed weekend for our exhibit
would be Saturday, June 25, 2005 and coincidental with Heritage Day and the
annual Strawberry Festival.
silent
auction: Three auction items begged for a new home, but
they went back home with Phil Goodwin.
show
& tell: Tom Vance brought in an
unusual piece. This Self-Recording
Barometer was made by Negretti
& Zambra, Scientific Instrument Makers of London, circa 1865. After restoration, Tom plans to offer a presentation
to the chapter.
Raffle
drawing: Jeff
Merrill won the first draw of $20 with Warner Vaughan winning the second
draw of $10. Congratulations to
both of you!
presentation: ”Tool
Time” kicked off with Jim Power’s tantalizing depthing tool. Although the tool itself was unmarked,
the box intimated French origin. It
was a gleaming beauty, and one tool among many treasures from an estate
auction!
Ern Grover followed Jim with
three of his handy shop tools. He
displayed a tooth straightening tool, an arbor straightening and lantern
pinion press tool, and a star cam puller, all made by Webster Tool Co.
John Hannington brought in his “one of a kind” floor
clock movement test stand, complete with T-slot tracks and lock down
spin-on knobs. It was a
beauty. Next he shared a variety of
other shop tools to include his staking set, Microset Timer, a precision
drill press for bushing work, a dryer box and a few dental tools he uses
around his shop.
Invitation:
Come join us at a future meeting.
We’d love to show you some Maine hospitality.
Ern Grover, Chapter 89
Secretary
