“Welcome to Maine, the way life should be!” Thirty-five members and guests arrived
at the Miller’s Restaurant in downtown Bangor. Rooms are no longer 50 cents, but you can be King of the Road
before 5:00 A.M. According to the
membership, Miller’s was one of the “most wicked good” buffet spreads
they’d ever experienced, Brother!
Newcomers aren’t strangers for long, for Chapter 89 is
known for good hospitality.
Everyone had an opportunity to ponder over the growing display of
auction items.
The 157th meeting and 35th year
of Maine Chapter 89 got underway at 11:00 a.m. with some NEW faces in the
crowd. During the Welcome Hour, we
caught up on the latest news.
The Business Meeting started around 1:00 PM, led by
President Dennis Hillman. He
welcomed members and guests during his opening introduction, and he called
for self-introductions.
OLD BUSINESS: The Treasurer’s Report was read and
accepted by the membership.
NEW BUSINESS:
Looking ahead: Our November Chapter 89 member meeting will
be held on November 20, 2004 at Tradewinds Restaurant, Rockland,
Maine. In addition to our guest
speaker James Lea on the topic “Clock Case Restoration”, the membership
will elect Chapter Officer positions for 2005.
President Hillman
asked for names to be put forward for the various positions, including
volunteers for several committees.
Norlands Project: The Chapter has been exhibiting at
Norlands as a means of promoting the Chapter, and clock collecting in
general. Members were requested to
bring some of their collection for next year’s event during Norlands
Strawberry Festival.
auction: A motion to adjourn the
meeting was made and seconded, and the members turned their attention to
the Annual Auction. President
Hillman reviewed the auction rules, and Terry Becker, a former president of
the Chapter, acted as auctioneer. There was a good offering of clocks, some
in fine running order, and others requiring a little tender love and care.
There was the usual enthusiasm in the bidding, as Terry described the items
and solicited bids. The members exhibited their true Maine tradition of not
overpaying for items. In the end most found a new home, including a United
electric ship clock, a tall case movement stand, assorted 400 day clocks, a
Big Ben alarm clock, and a nice column and cornice shelf clock. One
man’s junk is another man’s treasure.”
Invitation: Come
join us at a future meeting. We’d
love to show you some Maine hospitality.
thank you: In my absence, Alex Cummings was kind enough
to prepare the Minutes of the Meeting, and my apprentice, Jim Donald came
through with some great pictures.
Thank you very much.
Ern Grover, Chapter 89 Secretary
