“Welcome to Maine, the way life should be!”  Thirty-seven members and guests arrived at the Cascades Family Restaurant in Saco, Maine.  Maine’s State Bird, the black fly and her cousin, the “Skeeter” accompanied us.  Venturing out in early “Getting Ready For Wintah” helps us to forget the winter chill we left behind just a short time ago.  It was a nice and spacious dining area.

Newcomers aren’t strangers for long, for Chapter 89 is known for good hospitality.  Everyone had an opportunity to ponder over the growing display of Show ‘N’ Tell items, and we all enjoyed a whiff of ocean breeze from Old Orchard Beach.

The 155th meeting and 35th year of Maine Chapter 89 got underway at 11:00 a.m. with some NEW faces in the crowd.  During the Welcome Hour, we caught up on the latest news.

The Business Meeting started around 1:00 PM, led by President Dennis Hillman.  He welcomed members and guests during his opening introduction and asked for folks to make a “self introduction”.

OLD BUSINESS:  Chapter Secretary Ern Grover rendered a reading of the Minutes of the Meeting for our March 2004 meeting.  Assistant Treasurer Bob Merrill rendered the Treasurer’s report.  The membership accepted both reports.

NEW BUSINESS:

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  President Hillman announced an upcoming NAWCC Convention to be held in July at Oklahoma City for those interested.

Ben Crosby noted that we needed to be careful in our selection of meeting facilities to assure that those members with access and hearing difficulties would be accommodated at future events.  He further noted that membership who were serving Chapter 89 on committees and offices needed to be “time sensitive” when passing along information.

motions:  President Hillman opened the floor for discussion of continued support of the American Clock & Watch Museum in Bristol, Connecticut.  A motion was received and voted upon to maintain our yearly pledge of $100.00.  A second item for discussion was for travel compensation for our July 17th meeting speaker, David Lindow.  After brief discussion, a motion was received and voted upon to compensate Mr. Lindow in the amount of $250.00.

Looking ahead:  Our July 17th Lobster Fest Picnic will proceed as scheduled, again at the Rockport Boat Club.  We will have guest speaker David Lindow of Pennsylvania with us.

NEW MEMBERS INDUCTED:  Director Creighton Gogos officiated in the induction of Jean “Jennie” Mead and Ronald Peaker.  Chapter 89 membership gave them a hearty welcome.

show & tell:  Ern Grover brought in an unusual “It’s so ugly, it’s beautiful” Dutch clock with a dial inscription “I. Henkels, A. Amsterdam”, having a silk thread suspension and crown wheel escapement.  The clock strikes the hour on a large bell, and the half hour is repeated on a smaller bell.

Carroll Morse brought his E. N. Welch 30-hour steeple clock, having some gear ailments.  Nice piece, Carroll.

Sam Ogilvie brought his Welch “Doorstop” mantel clock, missing a bezel and in need of repair.  Heavy stuff!

Ed Wynne brought along some pictures of a restored steam powered clock.  Member Cal Morgan restored the clock with Ed.  We’ll see the completed project at a future meeting so Cal can expound on the restoration project.  “It not a clock you’d want in your bedroom,” Ed added.

Bob Merrill offered a little background about the origin of Welch Patti clocks while referring to an article in Steven Conover’s newsletter.

 Thanks everyone for sharing.

Silent auction:  A number of articles were displayed for the Silent Auction.  Charles Fairbrother officiated the auction, and some items got adopted.

Raffle drawing:  David Fawcett won the $20 first drawing, and Creighton Gogos won the $10 prize.

presentation:   Dennis Hillman led off our program “Clocks of E. N. Welch.”  The slide-tape program featured the empire of E. N. Welch, the most prominent & wealthiest man in the Connecticut area during the 19th century.

This slide-tape program was developed by Dorothy & Glenn Marsh of Chapter #69 and on loan from the NAWCC Library.

Invitation: Come join us at a future meeting.  We’d love to show you some Maine hospitality.

Ern Grover, Chapter 89 Secretary
