“Welcome to Maine, the way life should be!”  Forty-nine members and guests arrived at the Tradewinds Restaurant in downtown coastal Rockland, Maine.  An enormous steel lobster sculpture stood as sentry at the opening of the parking area and served as a reminder of the Annual Lobster Festival where over twelve tons of fresh hot Maine lobster is served from the world's largest lobster cooker.  After the parade and crowning of the Sea Goddess, there are several events.  The Crate Race is an extremely popular and fun event.  Contestants from all over the world take chances navigating a string of 50 partially submerged lobster crates. The winner is the person who stays upright over the largest number of crates.  Susan Lundquist, a mid-coast girl, holds the all-time record that managed 3,007 crates before she fell into the cold waters of the harbor!  Well, suh, we’re bracing for another Maine “wintah”, and a chilly wind down my neck was a grim reminder to go hunting for my L.L. Bean Long-Lohns.   Our meeting area was bright and cheery with a great view of the waterfront and harbor activities.

Newcomers aren’t strangers for long, for Chapter 89 is known for good hospitality.  Everyone had an opportunity to ponder over the growing display of Show ‘N’ Tell items, and we all enjoyed a whiff of ocean breeze from Rockland harbor.

The 158th meeting and 35th year of Maine Chapter 89 got underway at 11:00 a.m. with some NEW faces in the crowd.  During the Welcome Hour, we caught up on the latest news.

The Business Meeting started around 1:00 PM, led by President Dennis Hillman.  He welcomed members and guests during his opening introduction and asked for folks to make a “self introduction”.

OLD BUSINESS:  Chapter Secretary Ern Grover rendered a reading of the Minutes of the Meeting for our September 2004 meeting.  Assistant Treasurer Bob Merrill rendered the Treasurer’s report.  The membership accepted both reports.

NEW BUSINESS:

Looking ahead:  Our January 15, 2005 Meeting will be held at some awesome place.  The meeting place and program are pending at this time.

NEW MEMBERS INDUCTED:  President Dennis Hillman officiated in the induction of Dan Holmgren and Charles French.  Welcome to the family of Chapter 89!

ELECTION OF OFFICERS:   After some brief comments, President Dennis Hillman and Immediate Past President James Lea announced vacant officer positions and solicited nominations.  The member accepted and voted on the nominations.

2nd Vice President

show & tell:  Phil Goodwin brought an unusual and unsigned movement in order to determine the maker.  The count wheel is mounted “front and center”, and most closely resembles a movement as described in the NAWCC Bulletin, October 1977 as “Mr. Hall’s Clock”.

Raffle drawing:  Two generous members, Ken McVicar and Perry Mosher, declined the proceeds from the 50/50 draw, instead to put the money back into the treasury.  Thank You!

presentation:  James Lea is noted for his case restoration skills.  In this first of several future workshops, he addressed glue properties, veneer cutting techniques, and how to properly clean and clamp a repair area.  He demonstrated how to prepare veneer for curved surface repair on a steeple clock.  Later he addressed joint repair on a Winterhalter & Hoffmeier mantel clock brought in by member Wally Williams.  After watching him in action, no one can deny that he is a master of the trade.  We look forward to his next workshop where he’ll demonstrate other case repairs and refinishing techniques.

silent auction:  Jim Lea took home a lonely New England Clock Company shelf clock.

Invitation: Come join us at a future meeting.  We’d love to show you some Maine hospitality.
