“Welcome to Maine, the way life should be!” Thirty-four members and guests arrived
at Christo’s Place in Sanford, Maine.
That last 100 feet across the parking lot with wind from the
Northeast was a grim reminder that winter is grips us. It was nice to be in a warm dining area.
Newcomers aren’t strangers for long, for Chapter 89 is
known for good hospitality.
Everyone had an opportunity to ponder over the growing display of
auction items, and we all enjoyed catching up on the news.
The 153rd meeting and 35th year
of Maine Chapter 89 got underway at 11:00 a.m. with some NEW faces in the
crowd. During the Welcome Hour, we
caught up on the latest news.
The crew of Christo’s Place served up some delicious
Italian dishes to warm us up. There
was enough for everyone. I think it
was a mistake for us to use the dessert table for our Executive Council
Meeting, however.
The Business Meeting started around 1:00 PM, led by
President Dennis Hillman. He
welcomed members and guests during his opening introduction.
OLD
BUSINESS:
Minutes of the Meeting for our September 2003 meeting were read and
accepted. Treasurer Jim Powers
rendered his report to close out 2003.
The membership accepted both reports.
Looking
ahead: Our March 20, 2004 Meeting will be held at the Offshore
Restaurant in Rockport, Maine. Our
program agenda is to be announced.
NEW
MEMBERS INDUCTED: Director Creghton Gogos officiated in the induction of David
Fawcett of Sanford, Maine and Gerry Haviland of Brunswick, Maine. Welcome aboard David and Gerry!
show & tell: Rick Mechaber surprised
everyone with his new Black & Decker wet/dry vacuum cleaner. It was an awesome little machine. Rich noted that it was a great addition
to his machine shop area to keep the chips at bay. Jim Moss reinforced the importance of
using a vacuum cleaner around machine ways instead of using compressed air,
indicating that compressed air forces chips into the ways and damages the
machine. Tom Vance was next with a
beautiful wooden works movement and dial.
He requested some help in determining the maker of the clock. Nice piece, Tom.
Raffle drawing: Ern Grover won the first
drawing of $20 and new member Dave Fawcett took the $10 purse. Hey, $10 to a new member is a great
incentive to join up with Chapter 89.
presentation: Ern Grover led off our
program “How I Got Into the Clock Repair Business” with “Feel the
Heartbeat”, followed by a very humorous testimony by Jim Moss. Jim shared some of his childhood
experiences with us and kept the audience in stitches. Carl McCabe spoke next, sharing how
working on clocks became a wonder profession after years as a fire fighter
Invitation: Come
join us at a future meeting. We’d
love to show you some Maine hospitality.
Ern Grover, Chapter 89 Secretary
