“Welcome to Maine, the way life should be!” Forty-One members and guests arrived at
Rockport Boat Club in Rockport, Maine.
This time we needed a roadmap, but one whiff of Dow’east led us
right to the spot. What looked like
the beginnings of an overcast day, the sun broke through and gave us a
balmy summer day. Being right on
the water, it wasn’t too hot, it wasn’t too cold, it was just right. The breeze kept away Maine’s state
bird…the mosquito.
If you remember that awesome roadway arch shown in the
movie “Peyton Place”, then you’ve found Rockport, Maine. The arch still stands today, separating
Rockport and Camden.
The 150th meeting and 34th year
of Maine Chapter 89 got underway at 11:00 a.m. with some NEW faces in the
crowd. President Jim Lea extended a
hearty welcome to our visitors and friends of members and asked for
“self-introductions”.
A “Lobstah Picnic” and buffet luncheon consisting of
lobsters, steamed clams, corn on the cob, tater salad, coleslaw, bean salad
and a supply of desserts was served when the lid to the steamer-pot
clattered one last time. Since the
bugs didn’t jump out of the pot, we announced “Line up, roll your own
corn and get your lobstah and steamers!” Jim Lea’s granddaughter, Allison, was so helpful to lend a
hand. Thank you Allison. Anyway, the picnic was a grand success
with everyone pitching in to help with the spread of Dow’east stuff and
hospitality.
The Business Meeting started at 1:00 PM, led by
President Jim Lea.
OLD
BUSINESS:
Secretary Ern Grover rendered the Secretary’s Report, Treasurer Jim
Powers rendered the Treasurer’s Report.
The membership accepted both reports.
Looking
ahead: Our September 20th, 2003 Meeting will be held at
the Homestead Bakery in Farmington, Maine.
NEW BUSINESS:
C.
Nevil Lewis became the newest member of Chapter 89. Coincidentally he was also our guest
speaker for today’s meeting.
Chapter 89 President Jim Lea officiated his induction to the ranks
of membership. Each member, in
turn, extended a warm welcome to him.
Barbara McLaughlin announced that she would be
one of 90 artists featured on the weekend July 19th & 20th,
at the 27th Annual Juried Arts & Crafts Show to be held
on Atlantic Avenue in Camden, Maine.
Jim Lea and Neville Lewis both announced some
upcoming antique shows in Maine.
Show & Tell: Mel
Foley brought along a very old Seth Thomas time recorder wall clock,
sporting a double mainspring driven time train. Lovely piece! Ern
Grover brought along the front plate of an Aaron Willard tall clock, which
had been dry-tumbled in stainless steel Jeweler’s Mix, porous plastic
pellets, crushed walnut shells and rouge.
Silent auction: A number of articles were
displayed for the Silent Auction. Chapter 89 Vice-President Dennis Hillman
officiated the auction. Cal Morgan
got a rest from this time-honored tradition.
raffle draw:
First Prize of $20 went to Bob Walker, Second Prize of $10 went to
Margaret Bryant, special Third Prize of three lobsters went to Barbara Lea,
and special Fourth Prize of two lobsters went to Jim Powers.
presentation: New member C. Neville Lewis offered an
awesome overview of mercury and aneroid barometers, entitled “The Styles
and Secrets of Barometers “. He
noted the differences between the early, stick barometers, “banjo” or wheel
barometers, scientific or Fortin type barometers and the more modern
aneroid or mechanical barometric chamber type barometers. Several questions came from the
audience. Specifically he indicated
the safe means of transport of mercury type barometers. Near the end of his presentation he
exhibited a pocket altimeter used by early balloonists and mountain
climbers. Well done, Neville!
Invitation: Reach out! We encourage each of our members to invite someone to a
future meeting.
Leftovers went home with some happy and grateful members, and
everyone left, stuffed and with fond memories. Let’s
make this an annual event!
Respectfully submitted,
Ern
Grover, Chapter 89 Secretary
