The 145th
meeting of Maine Chapter 89 got underway with some NEW faces in the
crowd. President Ben Crosby extended
a hearty welcome to our visitors and friends of members, in spite of our
meeting location being changed to the Homestead Bakery & Restaurant,
Farmington, Maine.
WORKSHOP: We were quite pleased with our Guest
Speaker, Howard Klein, who offered a Hands-On
Workshop entitled “The Four Points
Most Overlooked in Repairing Herschede Tubular Bell Clocks” during
the social hour of today’s meeting.
The four points: 1)
The leather chime lever bumpers, 2) the governor tension, 3) the pulleys,
4) polishing the main wheel shoulders.
We’ve
more to report on this endearing gentleman later. The workshop and social hour were coincidental from 11:00
a.m. to 12:00 noon.
BUSINESS MEETING: President Ben Crosby called the meeting
to order at 12:00 noon and offered a welcome to the 38 members and guests
who made it through the meeting location change. He further explained the reason for the booking problem at
New Meadows Inn. He then called for
the reading of the Chapter Minutes of the July 20th meeting as
well as the Treasurer’s Report. The
membership accepted the minutes as read.
As an addendum to his Minutes, Ern Grover informed the membership,
with apologies, that the Chapter Highlights for May were late by 5 days,
thus the Highlights for May and July appeared together in the NAWCC
Bulleting for August 2002. He also
indicted an omission of the Special Recognition Award to Trudy Crosby with
the first draft that went to NAWCC.
That would be corrected with the Highlights of the September 21,
2002 submission with an accompanying photograph of Trudy Crosby.
Looking
ahead: Our
November 16th Meeting will be held at Martindale Country Club in
Auburn, Maine. We’re looking
forward to our Annual Chapter 89 Auction after we finish with our 2003
Business Meeting.
NEW MEMBERS INDUCTED:
Director Carl McCabe did the honors by officiating the induction of
four new members to Chapter 89.
Pictured, from left to right, are Philip Goodwin, Rich Mechaber
(with future clockmaker, Jacob, peeking from behind), John Vickery and
Frances Malette.
Show & Tell: Ern Grover
demonstrated the use of a fishing scale ($5 at Wal-mart) to use on
grandfather clock weights to record their weights in order to be able to
avoid taking a customer’s goods back to the shop. In addition, he demonstrated a shotgun storage case which
could house up to three pendulums for safe transport.
President Ben Crosby held up his Herschede Westminster
Mantel Clock, bearing “Gold Medal Winning Clocks” for the
membership to admire. Howard Klein,
formerly the owner of Herschede, explained that the clock, manufactured
around 1920, was ONE of MANY “Gold Medal Winning Clocks”. Still it was a beautiful prize even if
it wasn’t THE clock.
Member Robert Coffin brought along raffle tickets for a
clock being offered by the Machias Historical Society. Several members “took their chances.”
DRAWING:
Since our Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer were unable to attend,
there were no tickets available for a drawing.
Presentation: Howard
Klein of York, Pennsylvania presented “History and Manufacture of Herschede
Clocks”. With his years of dedication as
former owner of the Herschede Clock Company, his overall presentation
exhibited the intensity of his devotion in the manufacture of one of
America’s most sought after line of quality clocks. Using a slide presentation, Howard took
us through the process of Herschede Clock manufacturing from beginning to
end. It was an awesome
presentation.
Respectfully submitted,
Ern
Grover, Chapter 89 Secretary
