The144th meeting of Maine Chapter 89 of the NAWCC, was held at New Meadows Inn , in West Bath, Maine on Saturday, July 20, 2002. There was a turnout of 30 members and guests, some who traveled some distance to attend.  Thank you, everyone, for your commitment to Chapter 89.

A Social Hour was well under way by 11:00 am, and many folks had the opportunity to chat one-on-one, and view the items for Show & Tell.

Luncheon: At 12:00 noon we all enjoyed a served luncheon of several seafood and landlubber entrees on the buffet.

Business Meeting:  President Ben Crosby called the meeting to order, and self-introductions were made.  Ern Grover, Chapter Secretary, read the Secretary’s Report on the minutes of the May 18th, 2002 (143rd) meeting.  Jim Powers, Chapter Treasurer, read the Treasurer’s Report.  The membership present accepted the reports as read.

Under New Business, President Ben Crosby requested those who would be interested in serving several positions in NAWCC for upcoming elections to contact him.

The Upcoming Meeting:  President Ben Crosby announced Howard Klein, formerly of Herschede Clock Company, would be our guest speaker for the September 21, 2002 meeting on the topic “History and Manufacture of Herschede Clocks“.  Our special thanks go to Bob Laird for making initial contact with Howard and Penny Klein for this engagement.  Our 145th meeting will be held at New Meadows Inn in West Bath, Maine with a buffet luncheon.  Furthermore, the annual auction, normally held during the September meeting would be moved to November, in order to accommodate our guest speaker.  Hence, the November meeting will be a special member meeting in which we’ll enjoy our annual auction as well as for the election of chapter officers and directors for 2003.  Our November 2002 meeting will be at the Martindale Country Club in Auburn, Maine.

Norlands Exhibit:  President Crosby reported that the Norlands Exhibit was cancelled for this year, as there was not enough participation from Chapter 89 members to permit the event.

New Member Inducted:  Director Creighton Gogos officiated in the induction of Roger Jette of Old Orchard Beach to Chapter 89.

Show N Tell:  Jim Bryant stood up to report a car theft.  He held up the remains of his Pierce Arrow motorcar…. A Waltham clock in combination with an odometer and speedometer.  The car is a classic as is Jim.  Jim Bryant gleefully noted that a Pierce Arrow must have heavy springs to be able to carry such heavy instrumentation.

President Crosby held up a 37 size Waltham travel clock he recently acquired.  He noted that the April 2002 issue of the NAWCC Bulletin had quite an informative article about Waltham clocks, which included his new collectible as well as what was left of Jim Bryant’s Pierce Arrow.

Silent Auction:  None

Raffle Drawing:  Ern Grover was the winner of the first drawing of $20.00 and second drawing of $10.00 in the raffle.  “I have a conscience.  Flip a coin.  Heads I win, tails, the chapter wins.”  The chapter won.  “Hey, I lost $5.00 buying those tickets!”

Presentation:  Sam Ogilvie offered a presentation about dial restoration.  He brought along the dial and movement of a Seth Thomas gallery clock he was restoring.  After an extensive search for a reasonably priced dial restorer, he enlisted the help of his college-student son who was able to make the large dial at college.  The floor was opened for questions and comments about various methods of dial reproduction, preservation and adhesives.  “We’re still experimenting with this dial.”

Closing:  We had a reasonable turnout for a Maine summer day.   The fellowship and luncheon were fantastic!  “A good time was had by all.”

Respectfully Submitted,

Ern Grover

Chapter 89 Secretary
