Record attendance!  Sixty members arrived on this chilly Fall day, many having traveled great distances from Maine, Massachusetts, Maritimes Canada and from out west, New Hampshire.  Some traveled through snow and sleet; the threat of an early winter storm hung in the air.  When we arrived at the Martindale Country Club in Auburn, Maine, few wasted any time retreating to the warm and spacious dining room in the clubhouse.

The 146th meeting and 33rd year of Maine Chapter 89 got underway with some NEW faces in the crowd.  President Ben Crosby extended a hearty welcome to our visitors and friends of members.  Chapter 89 finished out 2002 with an increase of 22 members.

President Crosby called for members to make “self-introductions”.  The Secretary’s Report and Treasurer’s Report were rendered and accepted by the membership.

Looking ahead:  Our January 18, 2003 Meeting will be held at New Meadow’s Inn at West Bath, Maine.  Luncheon will be $12.50 (amended) for a buffet spread of seafood and landlubber choices.  Ern Grover will finally be able to finish his presentation on Dutch “stoel” and “staart” clocks.

AWARD:  Jim Bryant boldly stepped before the Chapter 89 Banner to receive an award for dedicated service to Chapter 89.  He’s been a wonderful friend to many in the chapter over the years.  This member goes the extra mile.  In Jim’s smooth tongue, “tryin' to be a timely friend, and hope to live up to this honor.”

NEW MEMBER INDUCTED:  Sally Frkonja was formally inducted as a new member of Chapter 89.  Sally was informally accosted with the “golden pendulum” as Ern asked her to bend over to be smacked with the “golden pendulum” as her initiation.  It was all in fun, Sally.  She recently graduated from formal training at NAWCC in Columbia, PA.  Sally highly commends the school and has nothing but good to say about Roger at NAWCC.

Show & Tell:  Jim Lea brought along one of newest masterpieces, a Simon Willard reproduction shelf clock of very fine mahogany and exact reproduction castings of the feet.  He explained that the Willard Museum permitted him to remove a cast foot from one of their clocks for him to make a model for future casting.  Good move, Jim.

Ern Grover held up “My First Clock” as a temptation to buy more raffle tickets.  Alex and Jane Cummings and a few other well-wishers assembled it before the third drawing of our Chapter raffle.  Maybe the winner can get it to run.

raffle draw:  First Prize of $20 went to Linda McConaghy, Second Prize of $10 went to Kevin Brown, and Third Prize (“My First Clock”) went to Philip Goodwin.

president’s annual report:  President Ben Crosby rendered a very informative and emotional report to the membership.  His years of dedication will surely mark him as one of the best Presidents in the history of Chapter 89.  There were a few misty eyes and sniffles in the gathering.  Our heartfelt thanks go to Ben, a real friend and dedicated leader of Chapter 89.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS: “It was over before it started!”  Nominations were expressed from the floor for the vacancies of President and 1st Vice President.  Motions were offered and the membership voted on the nominations.

I wish to offer a footnote as the Chapter 89 Secretary.  “I’ve endeavored to perform my duties with excellence with respect to conduct, record keeping to the little frills on the meeting announcements.  Our Chapter 89 Web Site is ‘up to date’ and informative.  Thank the Lord for a dependable computer to make the job easier.  All records that became my responsibility are now on database with redundant copies available to other Chapter 89 Officers.  Another note, my wife and I are in the process of moving to the Harrisonburg, Virginia area.  This won’t happen overnight.  In the interim, I plan to be making a pilgrimage to Maine coincidental with chapter meetings.  However, you’d better get well acquainted with Jim Bryant.  He’ll be carrying the torch unless he hides behind that traffic light at Shy Corner.  Thank you for your confidence and support.”

Annual auction:  Cal Morgan changed hats and became our auctioneer during the next hour.  Ruth Cassidy donated nearly everything from Bill’s shop to our auction.  This was a very generous and thoughtful gesture.  Our sincere thanks go to her.  We shall always remember Bill as a helpful, friendly and supportive member of Chapter 89.  In all, books, clocks and tools brought $435.50 in added revenue to the chapter treasury.

Invitation:  Reach out!  We encourage each of our members to invite someone to a future meeting.  Consider what a guest could contribute to the education and mission of Chapter 89 as a member.  Application forms are available from the Chapter Secretary or may be downloaded from our web site at http://www.nawcc89.org/application.htm .

Respectfully submitted,

Ern Grover, Chapter 89 Secretary
